The Heist

In the early hours of March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers gained entry to the museum. They approached the security desk and informed the guards that they were responding to a disturbance call. The guards, in a breach of protocol, allowed the men inside. Once inside, the thieves quickly overpowered the guards, handcuffing them and securing them in the museum’s basement.

The thieves then spent 81 minutes moving through the museum, selecting and removing 13 pieces of art. Among the stolen works were:
