Coca-Cola Bottled for the First Time: March 12, 1894
1894 · Vicksburg, United States
Coca-Cola is sold in bottles for the first time in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
On May 29, 1886, pharmacist John Pemberton placed an advertisement in the Atlanta Journal, introducing his new beverage, Coca-Cola, to the public. This advertisement marked the commercial debut of what would become one of the world’s most iconic brands.
John Pemberton, originally a pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia, formulated Coca-Cola in 1886 while seeking to create a coca-based drink that would compete with another popular beverage, French Wine Coca. Initially, Coca-Cola was marketed as a patent medicine, believed to cure various ailments.
The advertisement in the Atlanta Journal was a significant step in promoting this new product. The ad described Coca-Cola as a “Delicious, Refreshing, Exhilarating, Invigorating” drink. Priced at five cents a glass, it was advertised to be “offered as a soda fountain drink,” enticing consumers to try something new and invigorating.
Following its introduction, Coca-Cola saw gradual growth in popularity. In the beginning, on average, only nine drinks a day were sold. However, with innovative marketing strategies and the eventual establishment of the branding and bottling system that allowed for mass production and distribution, the consumption of Coca-Cola products increased exponentially.
Today, Coca-Cola is not only a leading brand in the beverage industry but also a significant cultural icon worldwide. The advertisement placed by John Pemberton was the starting point of a global phenomenon, and May 29, 1886, is a pivotal date in the history of Coca-Cola, marking the first time the drink was introduced to the public as a commercial product.
