Early Life

Born Aimee Elizabeth Kennedy, she was raised in a devout Christian home, with her mother, Mildred, being a strong influence because of her involvement with the Salvation Army. Aimee’s exposure to religious and social issues from a young age likely laid the foundation for her future in ministry.

Spiritual Awakening and Ministry

Aimee Semple McPherson’s spiritual journey intensified after she married Robert Semple, a Pentecostal missionary, who introduced her to the Pentecostal movement. Following Robert’s untimely death in 1910, Aimee continued her evangelical work.

In 1913, she married Harold McPherson and settled briefly into domestic life, but her calling to preach drove her to establish her path as an evangelist. By 1916, she had fully committed to the ministry, setting the stage for her future career in California.

Significance

Aimee Semple McPherson utilized the burgeoning mass media, particularly radio, to reach a wider audience, becoming one of the earliest religious leaders to adopt this technology effectively. Her influence was instrumental in the spread of Pentecostalism, particularly through the establishment of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in 1923, in Los Angeles, California.
