Advance Australia Fair Becomes Australia’s National Anthem

On April 19, 1984, “Advance Australia Fair” was officially proclaimed as the national anthem of Australia, replacing “God Save the Queen.” This change marked a significant moment in Australia’s cultural and national identity, reflecting the country’s move toward a more distinct and independent national character.

Background

The journey to adopting “Advance Australia Fair” began several decades earlier. Originally composed by Scottish-born Peter Dodds McCormick, the song was first performed in 1878. Over the years, it gained popularity as a patriotic song among Australians, although “God Save the Queen” was the official anthem due to Australia’s ties to the British monarchy.

In the 1970s, as Australia was experiencing a period of cultural evolution and national assertiveness, there was growing sentiment for a uniquely Australian anthem. In 1977, a national plebiscite was held alongside the general election to test the public’s preference for a national song. “Advance Australia Fair” emerged as the favorite, securing 43.29% of the votes, followed by “Waltzing Matilda” and “Song of Australia.”

The Official Change

The final decision to adopt “Advance Australia Fair” as the national anthem was made by the Australian government under Prime Minister Bob Hawke. On April 19, 1984, the proclamation was officially signed, formalizing the switch. Additionally, the anthem’s lyrics were modified to better reflect contemporary Australian society and ideals. Notably, the original second verse was replaced with a new one, and certain phrases were adjusted to ensure inclusivity and relevance.

Significance and Legacy

The adoption of “Advance Australia Fair” signified a pivotal step in Australia’s development of a separate national identity, distinct from its colonial past. It underscored sentiments of self-determination and cultural pride, resonating with the country’s history and aspirations. The anthem is regularly performed at public events, including official ceremonies and sporting events, serving as a unifying symbol of the nation.

Aftermath

Since its adoption, “Advance Australia Fair” has been both celebrated and critiqued. While many view it as a fitting expression of Australian values and unity, others have called for further changes to address issues of inclusivity, particularly concerning references that represent Indigenous Australians and their heritage. Despite these debates, the anthem remains an integral part of Australia’s national identity.

Through its official proclamation in 1984, “Advance Australia Fair” marked an important evolution in how Australians perceive their national character, offering a reflection of both their historical journey and future aspirations.
