Jo Cox was born on June 22, 1974, in Batley, West Yorkshire. Before entering politics, she had a distinguished career in humanitarian work, notably with Oxfam, where she focused on global poverty and human rights issues. In 2015, she was elected as the MP for Batley and Spen, a constituency in West Yorkshire. Cox was known for her passionate advocacy on issues such as the Syrian civil war, refugee rights, and the European Union.
On the afternoon of June 16, 2016, Jo Cox was attacked outside the library in Birstall, where she was scheduled to hold a constituency surgery. The assailant, Thomas Mair, shot and stabbed Cox multiple times. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the attack.

The murder of Jo Cox was a profound moment in British politics, occurring just a week before the UK’s EU referendum. It prompted widespread condemnation and led to increased discourse on political rhetoric, hate crimes, and the safety of public officials.
In the wake of her death, the Jo Cox Foundation was established to continue her work on issues she was passionate about, promoting community cohesion and combating loneliness. Her legacy is also honored through the annual “Great Get Together,” an initiative encouraging communities to come together in celebration of unity and diversity.
Jo Cox’s murder underscored the dangers of political extremism and the need for civility in public discourse. It served as a reminder of the personal risks faced by public servants and the importance of safeguarding democratic values against violence and hatred.
